Silly arguments
My Advanced Rhetoric class is basically a class in how to argue. I love it. I mean, I'm not an argumentative person by nature, but I'm super jazzed about learning how to keep up with my brainy friends. Anyway, right now we're studying techniques for refuting arguments. We were given 10 minutes to write about refute an argument against something immoral or socially unacceptable. It could be a general issue or a specific current event. I went the slightly tongue-in-cheek route becase we were just going to be sharing these in class. I wrote about that astronaut lady who drove 900 miles an adult diaper to kill her lover's lover. Or whatever. Anyway, here's my response:
Who are you to accuse her? Have you never had a lapse in judgement? Are you above jealousy? Anger? Hatred? Do we not all have the capability for grave actions? In art, theater, and literature, we glorify those who seek vigilante justice, yet you condem this woman for taking matters into her own hands. America values independant thinking, and strives to promote it. It is a country built on progress through the breaking of laws. America was once a British colongy, and broke the british law by rising in revolution. This woman broke the law to regain the man she loved. Is this any less noble of a cause? Surely the freedom of one heart is not worth more than that of another. Truely, gaining love may be the highest form of freedom there is."
